Colin Chapman’s Team Lotus and driver Jim Clark returned to the Brickyard® for their third attempt in 1965. Clark had an easy May. He passed up the Grand Prix of Monaco, and reached competitive speeds quickly. Clark qualified second-fastest at 160.729 mph, beaten to the pole by A.J. Foyt in an updated Lotus 34. When the race began, Clark and Foyt began a duel that would leave the rest of the field behind. Foyt led the 2nd lap, but Clark resumed the lead next time around. Early in the race Foyt shadowed Clark, but Clark stayed in control until his first pit stop. After Foyt’s stop, Clark led by half a lap. Foyt’s challenge lasted until Lap 116, when he pulled the last car on the same lap with Clark into the pits to retire with a broken gearbox. Clark was able to reduce his pace and still lap the field. Lotus pit strategy employed the famed Wood Brothers NASCAR pit crew, but the real secret was a clever refueling system. Lotus could insert fuel hoses on both sides of the car to minimize refueling time under new regulations which mandated gravity feed refueling. At the finish Clark was two laps ahead of 2nd place Parnelli Jones in an updated Lotus 34 and 3rd place rookie Mario Andretti in a Brawner. Jim Clark led 190 laps and won the 1965 Indianapolis 500® at a record speed of 150.686 mph. Clark and Team Lotus would also win the 1965 World Driver’s Championship. This is still the only time that the same driver and team won both in the same year. It was the first Indianapolis victory a rear-engine car, the first for a British car, and the first for a foreign driver since 1916.
