1901 De Dion Bouton is regarded as the first "peoples" car. It was affordable and introduced many features for the first time. The De Dion featured a "high speed" engine capable of 1,800 RPM, a constant mesh gear system and the famous De Dion rear end which is still employed on some of the most exotic and expensive sports cars. Capable of a 26 miles per hour top speed, the easy-to-drive De Dion was popular for many years because of its reliability. As the Horseless Carriage grew up, it became more comfortable and the design became more functional. Wood-trimmed fenders appeared on this "luxurious" machine. Leather seats, rubber tires and polished brass fixtures were apparent, and are depicted on this model. Colored and plated plastic, along with simulated wood decals, give a good impression of this representative of the early age of motoring. |
